Piles or Hemorrhoids are basically swollen and inflamed veins in the rectum and anus causing discomfort and bleeding.

Hemorrhoids are usually caused by straining during bowel movements, obesity or pregnancy.

Discomfort is a common symptom, especially during bowel movements or when sitting. Other symptoms include itching and bleeding. It can affect males as well as females also. Major reasons behind piles is always wrong food habits and drinking less of  water which causes chronic constipation and it leads to piles or hemorrhoids.

Symptoms

  • Bleeding from the anus, this can occur before, during or after stools. There will be bright red blood, not usually mixed with the stools, but often seen on the toilet paper
  • Soreness, pain, itching and burning in the anal region after stools.
  • In the case of profuse bleeding that is chronic, the patient may become anemic also.
  • The sensation of something coming down, or a bulge or lump at the anus is felt before and during stools.
  • If the piles are outside the anus, they may develop a blood clot inside (thrombosed piles)  causing a sensation of tender hard lump that gives the feeling of itching in the anal region.

Treatment consists of diet modifications along with high fiber diet.

A high-fiber diet can be effective, along with stool softeners. In severe cases, surgery is recommended but reoccurrence is usual after surgery after few months in some cases.
