Asthma is chronic inflammatory disorder of the airway, characterized by reversible airflow obstruction causing cough, wheeze, chest tightness and shortness of breath.

In this condition person’s airways become inflamed, narrow and swell and produce extra mucus, which makes it difficult to breathe.

Asthma can be minor or it can be major interfering with daily activities.

In some cases, it may lead to a life-threatening attack.

Asthma can be classified into 3 different groups

1 Episodic asthma;  Here the patient has no respiratory symptoms but paroxysms of wheeze and difficult breathing may occur at any time and can be of sudden onset.

2  Severe acute asthma; Here the cough  aggravates the respiratory distress and symptoms accompanied by tachycardia and sweating.

3  Chronic asthma; Here the symptoms of chest tightness. Wheeze and breathlessness on exertion, together with spontaneous cough and wheeze during the night and early morning causing lot of discomfort in breathing.

Symptoms

  • Asthma may cause difficulty breathing, chest pain, cough and wheezing.
  • Cough can occur at night, during exercise, can be chronic, dry, with phlegm, mild, or severe.
  • There will be  difficulty in breathing, wheezing, breathing through the mouth, fast breathing.
  • Frequent respiratory infections, rapid breathing or shortness of breath, especially at night.
  • Also common are  chest pressure, flare, anxiety, early awakening, fast heart rate and throat irritation.

Treatment

In other sciences asthma are usually managed with rescue inhalers to treat symptoms (bronchodilators) and controller inhalers that prevent symptoms (steroids).

Severe cases may require longer-acting inhalers that keep the airways open , and in the end

Certain side effects may be seen.
